The Ku Klux Klan was developed in 1870 because white middle class citizens were afraid of blacks taking opportunities from them. Blacks were just recently given citizenship which meant they were able to obtain jobs. This caused over 10,000 members to join the "army". The KKK grew rapidly in North Carolina which gave NC the nickname Klansville. The Klan would meet often considering it a social gathering. They would come together to play music, eat food, and listen to speakers that would voice opinions that all of them shared. This would create tension and anger throughout the whole Klan which would push them to do more. The Klan would walk through town together in groups with their white hoodies to display and power. The Klan would also sometimes portray violence. They would kill blacks that got in their way. Although the KKK was very prominent in North Carolina, there were groups all around the nation.
